COMPRES20040013

Pressure-temperature conditions achievable in the laboratory for studies of the plastic behavior of materials, in comparison with the conditions inside the Earth [geotherm]

COMPRES20040014

Cartoon cross section of a subduction zone showing the principal mineralogy of the upper 800 km of Earth's mantle. Arc volcanism at the surface is depicted, as are upper mantle earthquakes (red dots and white diamonds) thought to be the result of dehydration of water-bearing minerals, principally serpentine, and transition zone earthquakes thought to be caused by progressive breakdown of metastable olivine as the down-going slab heats up.

COMPRES20040015

Geotherm with P-T ranges accessible by static techniques

COMPRES20040016

Experimental setup for high pressure (multianvil) studies using synchrotron x-rays. The diagram also demonstrates some typical experiment capabilities for such a system including energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction using SSD, angle-dispersive using CCD and translating imaging plate, density/viscosity measurement using radiographs and sound velocity measurement using ultrasonic interferrometry. The system is developed at National Synchrotron Light Source by Stony Brook Mineral Physics Institute. Diagram is created by Jiuhua Chen.
Contributors include Michael Vaughan, Liping Wang, Donald Weidner and Baosheng Li.
